The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is currently seeking applicants for its 2020 Gallery Artist Residency, a five-week paid residency January 6 through February 10, 2020 in CHAW’s Gallery at 545 7th Street, SE, Washington, DC, 20003. The residency provides an opportunity for a dynamic individual artist or artist team to create a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in a stimulating, supportive environment. The residency also encourages interaction, dialogue and exploration both within the CHAW artist community and city-wide. Completed applications are due August 31, 2019 at www.chaw.org/artist-residency.

“The right fit is someone who is interested in transforming the gallery space and who is looking for a blank slate that is theirs, offering freedom, challenge, and openness to the artistic process, as well as a collaborative community element,” says Ellen Cornett, CHAW’s Resident Gallery Manager.

“The Gallery Residency at CHAW was transformative for me,” says 2019 Gallery Artist Resident Lenora Yerkes. “Having the space and time to thoroughly connect with a new body of work is something every artist needs, but the spirit of CHAW’s community–its enthusiasm, support and fresh perspectives–created an environment I couldn’t have found anywhere else. The faith they place in the work of their gallery residents is powerful.”

Qualified applicants are professional individual artists or collaborative artist teams over the age of 18; the program is not designed for undergraduate students or commercial artists. Artists must be available to work a minimum of 10 hours a week in the CHAW gallery during the five weeks of the residency. CHAW will not provide housing for Gallery Resident artists. After reviewing all the applications, three artists or artist teams will be interviewed at CHAW by the Resident Gallery Manager and the CHAW co-directors.
