Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art (Tephra ICA) seeks regional artists for the biennial Mary B. Howard Invitational exhibition, guest curated by Liz Ensz.

The group exhibition will focus on the associative power of materials, and how they contribute to the meaning of the artwork. This opportunity is for artists who explore how textile practices embody and express culture. With interconnection being a fundamental quality of textile construction, and social interconnection a fundamental aspect of their production, the flexible language of loops, knots, interlacements, and attachments all speak to the relationships of which our world is made.

Liz Ensz; artist, curator, and Full-Time Faculty in Fiber at Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art (MICA); will work with selected artists to develop a group exhibition, for which each artist creates and presents new work. Tephra ICA encourages all eligible artists to apply regardless of whether they are currently working with fiber. Artists working with a range of traditional material practices and experimental forms are welcome. Tephra ICA will provide an honorarium of $310 (based on W.A.G.E. calculator) and an additional $1,000 materials fee for each participating artist.

Exhibition Dates: December 14, 2024 – February 22, 2025
Deadline to Apply: May 15, 2024 EXTENDED to May 31, 2024
Application Fee: $25

Artists are invited to apply for participation with a portfolio of recent work, an artist statement, and a statement of interest.
