Hillyer Call for Exhibition Proposals: 2023-2024

By Editorial Team on July 26, 2022

Deadline: Fri, 16 September 2022

Featured exhibitions at Hillyer during 2021-2022.

Hillyer is accepting proposals for exhibitions to take place between January and December 2023. Through this competitive selection process, accepted artists are awarded a month-long exhibition in one of our three gallery spaces.

Selection Process

All proposals that meet the gallery’s qualifications are reviewed and selected by Hillyer’s Artist Advisory Committee, which is composed of established artists and arts professionals and is chaired by the Hillyer’s Director, Timothy Brown. Accepted artists also benefit from our Advisory program, where our highly qualified committee members work closely with each artist to help prepare them for their exhibitions and related programs. Learn more about Hillyer’s Artist Advisory Committee.

Qualifications

Hillyer focuses on a combination of emerging and accomplished artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC, although considerations are given to international artists, or curators who would like to submit proposals for group shows. Preference will be given to artists who have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years at a museum, professional gallery or art space. Artists who are selected will receive the following:

  • Support and guidance from Artist Advisory members.
  • A solo exhibition for one month in one of Hillyer’s gallery spaces.
  • A $350 stipend.
  • An opening reception.
  • Assistance with installation.
  • Assistance with labels and didactics.
  • Digital marketing and press exposure.
  • Programmatic support to include one or a combination of the following: workshops, talks, blog review/articles/Q and A, virtual programming, and video documentation.
