The Historical Society challenges local artists to create 2D artwork depicting a specific neighborhood in each of the city’s eight wards: Burleith, Buzzard Point, Congress Heights, Howard Town/Pleasant Plains, Ivy City, Kenilworth, Palisades, and Shepherd Park.
Throughout its 122-year history, the Historical Society of Washington, DC has helped preserve depictions of the city’s built environment through paintings and photographs. Since 2014, the Historical Society’s For the Record program and exhibition has continued the tradition of capturing Washington’s built environment through the arts. For the Record has provided exposure, recognition, and enduring prestige to local artists, and has raised funds to support the Historical Society.
The 2017 exhibition will feature artwork depicting eight neighborhoods, one in each of the city’s wards. Only artwork featuring or depicting the following eight neighborhoods will be accepted:
- Ward 1: Howard Town/Pleasant Plains
- Ward 2: Burleith
- Ward 3: Palisades
- Ward 4: Shepherd Park
- Ward 5: Ivy City
- Ward 6: Buzzard Point
