Request For Qualifications
The Mount Rainier Arts Commission is excited to announce a Request For Qualifications from artists for a public mural project at 3310 Rhode Island Avenue. The Commission will accept applications from November 28th, 2019 through January 7th, 2020. All artists must apply at PublicArtist.org , and should upload all required documents to the project listed as, Mount Rainier 2020 Mural Project (MD).

Project Description: Budget $15,000
The mural will be installed on the front and side façades of a newly renovated building located at 3310 Rhode Island Avenue in the City of Mount Rainier, Maryland. This building will host a new farm-to-table restaurant, Pennyroyal Station, focusing on mid-Atlantic inspired cuisine and opening in early 2020. The exterior walls are stucco, and have been recently renovated. The condition of the stucco is very good, is clean, and is textured. The Art Commission does not expect any significant wall preparation prior to the implementation of the mural. The mural is expected to survive for at least 10 years.
With a focus on highlighting public and business assets of Mount Rainier, the Arts Commission is seeking a contemporary artwork that will enrich our community. We seek a project that will also enhance the visual experience and provide lasting inspiration for public involvement in the arts, while maintaining a commitment to quality and a positive impact on the community.
This call is open to any artist or artist led teams, 18 years or older, who are US citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Artists applying should present a proven track record of completing projects of this size and scope. In order to be considered for this project, artist must submit the following information to the application Mount Rainier 2020 Mural Project (MD) hosted at publicartist.org
- Website and/or social media accounts, demonstrating project experience
- Maximum 15 images of 1-5 mural projects
- Image list with dimensions, years, and budgets of previous mural projects
- 3 professional references
Applications are due by January 7th, 2020. Up to three finalists will be selected and notified by January 20th, 2020. Finalists will be given a $500 stipend to design artwork and submit a budget for 3310 Rhode Island Avenue no later than February 20th, 2020. The Arts Commission and other interested parties will select a final design, and notify artists by March 24th, 2020. Any necessary revisions will be agreed upon no later than April 15th. The mural must be completed by May 15th, 2020.
