Pyramid Atlantic Screen-printing Associates are crucial to keeping the studio and darkroom thriving, relevant, and dynamic. This work-exchange associate position offers a unique opportunity to engage with Pyramid’s creative community, and work alongside professionals in a sharing/collaborative environment.

In exchange for working 12 volunteer hours a month for Pyramid, the Screen-printing Associate will have 24-hour access to studios and equipment and receive a 40% discount on most workshops. The Screen-printing Associate may also have opportunities to teach classes, collaborate with resident artists, and sell artwork in the Pyramid shop.

TERM

  • Associate terms are renewed annually up to 3 consecutive years. Preferences will be given to candidates who believe they can commit to the full 3-year term.
  • After 3 years, the term will end to allow new artists the opportunities of associateship. To help continue studio access, Pyramid offers a one-year Art Gym “Emeritus” rate to associates who have completed their 3-year term, which gives considerable discounts for studio access.
  • Associates are eligible after one year of “retirement” to apply for any open associate position.

SCHEDULE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES (these count toward volunteer commitment)

  • Associates will run the Screen-printing Happy Hours, which occur once per month. This responsibility is shared with your co-associate(s) and you should arrange a fair rotation.
  • Each associate is responsible for running 6 Make & Takes (or Zoom & Makes) annually. These are 2-hr weeknight workshops that are important points of entry for people who want to give Screen-printing a try.
  • Associates and the AD have a standing monthly one hour studio meeting (in-person or online) where they discuss goals, projects, maintenance, and programs. These meetings count toward the associate’s hours and associates must attend at least 8/year.
  • Demonstrate/teach during Pyramid events like HyBall, Open Studio Tour, and Arts and Ales as well as other community tours.

CORE WORK HOURS

  • The balance of volunteer hours (should total 12 per month) should be put into Pyramid’s calendar no later than 1 month in advance. It is preferred that these hours are scheduled during Pyramid’s public hours to help engage the community in Pyramid’s work. Two of these hours may be spent offsite.
  • Screen-printing and Darkroom Maintenance
    • Demonstrate commitment to screen-print/darkroom etiquette and best practices.
    • Ensure that the studio is safe, clean, and in working order
    • Take stock of supplies and add any needed materials to the supply order form.
    • Refill reclaimer and degreaser, mix emulsion, and tidy up the studio
  • Communication to stakeholders/students/potential clients
    • Reply to emails in a prompt and professional manner
    • Reach out to new or potential clients
    • Promote happy hours and make + takes
  • Other duties are assigned as needed.

TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES (outside of volunteer commitment)
Associates may be paid as “teaching artists” for workshops. Pyramid offers a variety of workshops throughout the year. While teaching engagements are not guaranteed, Associates are frequently the go-to teachers in their studio. When teaching classes/workshops, teachers are paid per contact hour (e.g. not prep time) as follows (rates subject to change):

  • 1 student (one-on-one lesson, Denbo fellow or certification)-$35 an hour
  • 2-3 students in workshop-$50 an hour
  • 4-6 students in workshop-$55 an hour
  • 7-8 students in workshop-$60 an hour

Once dates, times and instructors are agreed upon and published, Associates should set these as a priority. In the event they are unable to teach/lead, the AD should be notified immediately. Multiple cancellations will be cause to be removed from the teaching roster and possibly the associate program.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a communal studio, co-op, art center, etc.
  • Teaching experience, preferably in screen-printing
  • Experience working with diverse groups and leading in a culturally competent manner
  • Active personal studio practice
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
