About EMULSION 2017
EMULSION 2017 is an open call to all artists who reside or work in the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area within a 50 mile radius of East City Art’s offices on Capitol Hill. This is an opportunity for artists from the central Mid-Atlantic to showcase the extraordinary diversity and excellence in regional contemporary art.
An emulsion combines two seemingly incompatible ingredients to produce a third yet entirely new substance. In this spirit, East City Art’s EMULSION seeks to combine the regions’ cultural differences into a single blended exhibition by combining a wide array of art forms and expressions.
EMULSION 2017 will take place over a two-week period centering on an exhibition juried by Deirdre Ehlen MacWilliams, Public Art Project manager for Arlington County. EMULSION includes a competition with a total of $4,000 in cash prizes awarded to selected artists by the juror, an opening reception with artists in attendance and two artist talks. PEPCO Edison Place Gallery, located at 702 8th St NW, Washington DC, will host all EMULSION 2017 events.
EMULSION is produced East City Art, DC’s visual arts publication and led by renowned visual art event and festival producer Phil Hutinet. EMULSION is one of the region’s leading visual art events providing local artists with the opportunity to win cash awards and exhibit their work in a well-publicized and public forum. EMULSION has helped propel the careers of past participants by connecting them with acclaimed regional curators, gallerists and arts organizations.
About East City Art
Phil Hutinet began East City Art on January 4, 2010 to document and promote the growing visual arts movement in eastern Washington, DC. East City Art has become a full-fledged local art publication with over 60K monthly website visitors and a quarterly print publication with a circulation of 40K copies. The publication covers the DC metro region including Washington DC, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia.
East City Art writers profile local artists, initiate community discussions and review local exhibitions. Since its inception seven years ago, East City Art has emerged as one of the leading voices in DC’s visual arts community often influencing larger local and national publications.
East City Art ’s mission is to connect local artists with the community at large through facilitated dialogue. East City Art believes art’s most important role lies in its ability to lift the human spirit through a common visual language that transcends class, race and gender.
About Juror Deirdre Ehlen MacWilliams
Deirdre serves as public art project manager for Arlington’s nationally-renowned Public Art program where she develops and manages County-initiated projects and advises on various public art and design enhancement requests. Prior to joining Arlington, Deirdre worked as the public art coordinator for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) and for Weitzman Studios.
Deirdre also works independently on creative projects and initiatives. This year, she is the co-curator for What’s Going on Voices of Shaw, co-curator for the art collection at the Conway Center and curator of Georgetown GLOW.
In 2015, she was a project manager for Finding a Line, working with local artist and skateboarder Ben Ashworth and the Kennedy Center, the curator of Georgetown GLOW, the curator of Hickok Cole’s Art Night and curator and project manager for four new sculptures by Foon Sham located within Golden Triangle. In 2014, Deirdre was the curator for the Foggy Bottom Sculpture Biennial and in 2014 and 2012 was the producer for DCCAH’s temporary public art program 5×5. She also directs Mid City Artists, a group of professional artists who have come together for the purpose of promoting their art and the mid-city section of DC.
