The Hill is Home visited the Evolve Urban Art Project art space as part of their ongoing series of Capitol Hill and H Street corridor gallery visits.

ArtVentures on H  this year coincided with the two week long  Intersections Festival organized by the Atlas Theater.  This year’s ArtVentures was even bigger than the last year’s H Street art walk which took place in June of 2010.

CITY Gallery closed its doors permanently on February 26 with a closing party held that day from 3-5.   But don’t despair…  If you enjoyed the many artists you saw over the 2010-2011 showing season, they will be showing locally at multiple venues throughout the year and naturally, East City Art will be the first to let you know.

On the subject of gallery closings, it is worth noting that Fraser Gallery, located in Bethesda, MD well outside our coverage area, was one of the DC areas’ most prominent galleries and a cultural institution. Unfortunately, it will be  joining  two other downtown Bethesda galleries, Neptune and Discovery, that have closed their doors permanently.   The issue? High rents certainly contributed to the owners’ decision to close but more importantly, lack of community support  for local artists, that is lack of sales and interest in buying work from the galleries ultimately led to the closures.  Look for Kate Fraser at national art fairs in New York, Miami and Boston where people there buy work from our local artists…
