The paintings in this display reflect a life-long fascination by Betsy Gandy with the earliest known manifestations of art around the world, especially prehistoric cave paintings from the Upper Neolithic period (c.15,000-10,000 B.C.). After having the rare privilege of visiting caves in Puente Viesgo, Spain, and realizing how inaccessible the extraordinary paintings contained within those caves are to the general public, Gandy began formulating her own ideas for bringing the works out into the open hence the title of the series, Excavations.
