Reception: Friday, August 31 from 7:30pm to 9pm

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture sponsors one of the largest art shows in the region. The 48th Annual Labor Day Art Show will be held in Glen Echo Park’s historic Spanish Ballroom from September 1 through 3, 2018. Featuring over 200 artists and more than 600 works, the exhibition is free and open to the public and includes a reception on Friday, August 31 from 7:30 pm to 9 pm with many of the participating artists. The show runs from 12 pm to 6 pm each day.

A 48-year tradition, the show includes artwork in a wide range of media, including sculpture, painting and drawing, ceramics, glass, jewelry, photography, textiles, furniture, and works on paper. Artists from the Park and around the region participate in the annual exhibition. Last year, more than 9,000 visitors viewed the exhibition – and other Glen Echo Park Labor Day weekend activities – in the historic Spanish Ballroom.

This year, the Glen Echo Park Partnership will continue the Labor Day Art Show Awards, which were presented for the first time at the 2017 exhibition. Cash prizes of $250 each will be awarded for top works in the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional categories. In addition, the Park View Artist Award will include the opportunity for a solo art exhibition for the selected winner in the Park View Gallery at Glen Echo Park in January 2019. All participants qualify to be considered. The judge for the 2nd annual Labor Day Art Show Awards program is Adah Rose Bitterbaum, owner of the Adah Rose Gallery in Kensington, MD.

The 2018 exhibition also continues another relatively new tradition of allowing purchasers of jewelry to take their purchase with them on a “cash and carry” basis, rather than leaving it on display for the duration of the show. Sleeved prints will be sold on a cash and carry basis as well. All other purchased works will remain on display until the show closes.

Also during Labor Day weekend, the Glen Echo Park Partnership hosts an Open House for Classes on Saturday, September 1, to introduce adults and children to the wide range of visual and performing arts classes being offered at the Park this fall. The Open House will take place from 12 pm to 4 pm and will feature free classes and demonstrations; visitors will also be able to view resident artists at work in their studios. On Sunday, September 2, visitors will enjoy Free Dance Events including a Family Dance, presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington from 3 pm to 5 pm and a Waltz Dance presented by Waltz Time from 2:45 pm to 6 pm. On Monday, September 3, visitors may enjoy live performances presented at the Irish Music & Dance Showcase in the Park’s Bumper Car Pavilion from 1 pm to 6 pm. In addition, the historic Dentzel carousel will operate during the weekend and on Labor Day from 11 am to 5 pm.
