Opening: Saturday, September 23 from 6pm to 8pm

Susan creates cosmic drawings with pencil and pen full of golden transfers of energy and complex data systems. Her varied influences include Netflix recommendations, algorithms, microorganisms, Buddha warriors, particle physics, mapping, manga, and Olbers’ paradox. As Susan draws, a twist becomes a tug, a dash a dot. Meaning is folded into the repeated gestures that make up the whole form. In these intricate and ritualistic drawings, gold beams, cloud-like swirls of dots, and graphite spirals overlap elegantly. Intricate mark-making demands closer inspection of the work: Swaths of gold are not solid, rather value is built up through repeated dashes. Susan’s practice is ultimately meditative—an intellectual exercise in moving across the page. Her intricate, cosmic drawings juxtapose familiar patterns that resemble picturesque nebulas with unknown areas that are unresolved even to her. Data is collected, organized, and disassembled. Contained in each piece is a reflection on the nature of labor and perception of time.

Susan earned her MFA from the School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan in 2011. She received her BFA, Magna cum laude, in sculpture, art, and visual technology from George Mason University in 2008. During her three years at the University of Michigan, she worked as a Graduate Student Instructor. She has received several grants and fellowships, both as an undergraduate and graduate student. Susan was a Fine Air fellow at the Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda, MD. She has shown with Work in Detroit, A&D Works in Chicago, The University of Michigan, George Mason University, the Joan Hisoaka Healing Arts Gallery and the Rackham Centennial Exhibit in Ann Arbor, MI. This is Susan’s third show with the gallery.
