Addison/Ripley has invited and challenged gallery artist, Trevor Young, to paint a body of work, utilizing as the raw material the black velvet cloth of his 2016 installation for VOLTAGE. On display for a mere two days with a reception for the artist and the work each of the two evenings, this concept show signals a return, by the artist, to a familiar, minimal vocabulary on, possibly, the most kitschy of art materials.

Spare and elegant, in some cases panoramic, this relatively small collection of paintings, with titles like Bauble Island, Inflamed Slits and Sodium Caress, live on a spectrum between serious and whimsical. The unforgiving velvet surface is the equivalent of Chinese rice paper, the marks confidently pronounced from the artist’s memory, the views an iteration of our on the go, in the air, glow in the dark, “selfie” world. In each, the internal, artist derived architecture hangs hauntingly in infinite, black space.
