Opening Reception: Friday, April 5 from 6pm to 8pm
The 16th annual ArtFest Week is almost here! You’re invited to take part in this popular week-long celebration of Art in Arlington at the historic Hendry House at Fort C.F. Smith in Arlington. As always, it’s free and open to the public.
Highlights include an art show and sale featuring the works of 35 Arlington-based artists, including paintings of many genres, ceramics, sculpture, artists cards, and unframed works.
The Opening Reception will be held on Friday, April 5 from 6-8pm—come meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments at Hendry House.

Saturday, April 6
10:15-11:30am: Create a Card: Work with artist Jane McElvany Coonce to paint your own original note card to send to a special friend. Jane will demonstration how to paint flowers and then participants will create an original card and envelope using watercolor. All supplies are provided. Ages: 16 and up.

12-1pm: Demo: Develop Bold Paintings Using Paint+Adhesives: Michael Allison will demonstrate how to mask and build paint layers with adhesives such as tape and rubber cement. Tape can give your acrylic painting a screen printing-like quality and glue can provide a textured brushstroke feel without ever using a paintbrush. Ages: Adults.

1:30-3pm: Make Bold Painterly Art with Soft Pastels: Some of the most famous paintings by Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt were rendered using soft pastel sticks. Heike Gramckow will show you why the materials they used made such a difference, and what options we have today to achieve similar results. Watch a demo and paint along if you like. (Heike can provide a materials list for those who want to paint along.) Ages: Adults.

3:30-4:30pm: Demo: Sumi-e: Painting on Rice Paper: Demonstration by Carol Waite of Sumi-e (Oriental Brush Painting) which derives from the original brush writing. Special ink (Sumi) is used along with brushes made from rabbit, horse, or other animals. Brushes are loaded with several shades of ink, or a combination of colors so one stroke creates shading. Ages: Adults.

Sunday, April 7
12:30-1:30pm: Paint Your Favorite Animal: Gerda Lane will lead this hands-on activity where children trace and paint their favorite animal in watercolor or crayons. Kids will create a spring painting to share with their families. Gerda will provide materials–you provide your imagination and creativity! Ages: Families Welcomed.

2:00-3:00pm: Outdoor SmartPhone Portraits: Learn from photographer Liz Vance how to take simple, beautiful outdoor portraits with only your phone and available light. We will walk around the outside of the building and grounds of the park, looking for good-quality light, and learn simple posing and framing techniques that can be applied anywhere. You will also learn a simple, easy to remember rule for how to hold your phone (or camera) to make a flattering portrait. iPhone recommended but not required – any camera, traditional or smartphone, will work fine with these techniques. Ages: All ages welcome, children under 10 must have an adult present.

3:30-4:30pm: Create a Smash Book: Ilona Lantos will guide you in unleashing your inner artist by painting a cool cover for your petite smash book. Take home a cute mini art journal personalized by you and ready to make smash booking your daily practice. You do not need to know how to draw or paint. Creating art is for everyone! All materials are included, and Materials fee of $5 to be paid to Ilona at class. Ages: 10 to adult.

uesday, April 9
12:15-2:15pm: Hands-on: Ways to Play with Oil Bar and Panel: Oil bars are made to glide onto smooth wood panels. Create a design or painting on an 8 x 8 panel after a short talk and demonstration by Jackie Afram. Materials fee of $5 to be paid to Jackie at class. Ages: 18 and up.

Wednesday, April 10
2:30-4pm: Painting en Plein Air at Fort Smith Park: Come join watercolorist Tony Neville and bring your materials as you complete an onsite painting with one-on-one support from Tony. He will provide suggestions for subjects to paint in the park. An email will be sent all those registered by April 5th on choosing or adapting your materials for on-site painting. Ages: 14 and up.
