Opening: Friday, June 10 from 6pm to 10pm
Second-generation international artist Claire Sharp will display her work for the first time in DC. “Life in Layers” features a new collection of bold and abstract textured paintings. Often framed through the electrifying gaze of her young muse, Sophia, these are not your traditional portraits. Sophia’s world is a kaleidoscope of jagged colors and raw energy. Collage materials emerge from between the layers of bright acrylic paint. Gritty headlines of war, terror and angst are either hidden or exposed by the powerful brush strokes. Sharp’s use of color, contrast and collage create an inescapable connection between her subject and environment. Ultimately, the viewer feels empowered by Sophia as she dares to journey joyfully through her beautiful world.
This will be Sharp’s first solo show in 20 years. Originally showing in London at the Ian Armstrong Gallery and Golden Square Galleries, she then traveled the world working in the global financial sector, before transitioning to motherhood and back to her art. The show will include 10 paintings on canvas ranging in size from 1-4ft and in price from $500-$11,000.
