Known internationally for his Self-Portraits under the Influence of Love and Other Drugs, Bryan Lewis Saunders returns to his hometown Washington, DC for his first exhibition in the nation’s capital. In addition to his performance work and drawings under the influence, Saunders is probably best known for his self-portrait a day project. Since 1995, he has been completing daily self-portraits in sketchbooks, amassing hundreds of volumes of uncensored images of love, loss, pleasure, and pain.
For Sensations, Saunders collaborates with Nicole Bailey to present drawings that directly examine and refer to a shared experience of intimate physical interaction. Foot massage, ear nibbles, nipple stimulation, and spooning are just a few of the ‘sensations’ that are represented by both artists in playful, intuitive, and delicate drawings. The artists embarked on an exploration of sensory perception; for Saunders the awareness of pleasure became as keenly real as that of pain, while for Bailey the drawing process was a way to “feel out her body in space” and challenge her own body image issues. For both, the discovery of the similarities and differences in perception between two people of different genders and life experience became an unexpected result.
Bryan Lewis Saunders recent exhibits include; “Sous Influences: Artistes Et Psychotropes” La Maison Rouge, Paris, France, “Gregor Mendel Mutations” (solo exhibition), MIKA Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel, “Faceless II”, Museum Quartier (MQ21), Vienna, Austria and “The Third Ear Experiment”, Librarie Humus, Lausanne, Switzerland. Both artists currently reside in Tennessee.
