Opening Reception: Friday, April 1 from 6pm to 8pm

Cultural DC presents Sound of Butterfly, a solo exhibition by Soomin Ham on view from April 2-30, 2016 at Flashpoint Gallery. A reflection on her mother’s journey through life, depression, and death, this body of work presents Ham’s experimental approach to interpreting fleeting memories and grasping loss.

Sound of Butterfly includes poignant video/sound pieces as well as photographs of belongings Ham’s mother left behind. Before documenting these treasured objects, the artist embarks on a process of washing and freezing them, along with other interventions that guide her in interpreting the traces of her mother’s life. The resulting photographs preserve moments and objects that would have perished – or, like memory, would have faded. In capturing her mother’s presence in these narrative images, Ham is able to embrace her grief.
