Event: Sunday, May 14 (2 pm and 5 pm performances)
Dana Tai Soon Burgess, resident choreographer at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, will present a new modern dance titled “Transformations,” which will conclude his residency at the museum. The 30-minute abstract work for eight dancers is inspired by the Transcendental Painting Group, whose members lived in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, between 1938 and 1942.
“Transformations” will be accompanied by one of Dane Rudhyar’s compositions, performed live by pianist Dana Scott. The costumes are designed by Native American fashion designer Patricia Michaels (Taos Pueblo).
Before the performances, Burgess will sign copies of his memoir Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly outside the museum’s store, where it will be available for purchase.
McEvoy Auditorium at Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is located at Eighth and G streets NW.
