Opening Reception: Friday, December 9 from 6pm to 9pm
11:Eleven gallery is proud to present SELF HELP by London-based artist Eve De Haan under her popular pseudonym Half A Roast Chicken.
SELF HELP explores the power of positive thinking, and the impact it can have on our day-to-day lives when we make a conscious effort to shift our relationship with the concept in a bright and playful way.
Using neon lights as her medium, SELF HELP is a reminder that it’s ok to be your most authentic self and encourages you to get comfortable with the ambiguities that society forces onto our daily lives.
Half A Roast Chicken has exhibited in Europe and the US in iconic galleries such as the Saatchi gallery and the museum of neon in LA. She recently led an Instagram live for the iconic Tate Modern Museum in London and has had billboards displaying her artwork, created artwork for Nike, and has been featured in multiple major publications.
About the Artist
Half A Roast Chicken (Eve De Haan)
Based in London, Eve De Haan’s portfolio is replete with neon artworks, each sharing a different story, thought or catchphrase through short snippets of text. It’s an approach that developed out of her theology degree, where she realised encapsulating narratives through the written word was the best way to evoke collective emotions in an audience. Neon has allowed her to explore “how malleable definitions of words and phrases can be.” Eve’s artworks probe topics including technology, youth culture, and relationships.
Eve takes inspiration from her everyday experiences and she describes her practice as consolidating her thoughts and putting them out into the world. It’s through this avenue that she shares personal narratives, telling us that “expressing my experiences is part of my form of storytelling.” While her work only shares a short part of a story, she sees them as tantalising beginnings that allow the viewer “to complete the story themselves.” On why it’s important to have this kind of connection with her audience, she adds: “I believe storytelling expands the imagination.” Storytelling, she continues, “is a way of carrying culture. I feel it is a vital part of my creative practice. Everything you create is a story, from beginning to end.”
Eve has exhibited in Europe and the US in iconic galleries such as the Saatchi gallery and the museum of neon in LA. She recently led an instagram live for the Tate modern, she has had billboards in London, created artwork for nike and been interviewed for major publications.
ABOUT 11:ELEVEN GALLERY
11:ELEVEN GALLERY is a unique and dynamic addition to Washington D.C’s art scene, specializing in UK contemporary and urban art.
Our mission is to broaden the horizons of the already vibrant art scene within The District by introducing a more international approach, bridging the gap between the US and UK art markets and introducing some truly spectacular and sought after pieces, whilst developing the careers of local and UK emerging and under-represented artists.
We believe that art should be inclusive to all and exclusive to none, and this ethos is at the heart of everything we do; this is particularly visible in the exciting programme of gallery visits we’ve provided for schools in underserved neighbourhoods, mentoring artists and the provision on short and longer term internships for talented individuals who may otherwise be overlooked.
