Delna Dastur, The Giving Tree, mixed media on canvas, 48×36, 2022
Artist Reception: Saturday, September 10 from 5pm to 7pm

District Arts is pleased to present the paintings of DMV artist Delna Dastur in a featured artist exhibition that focuses on Nature and its ebullience, bringing joy and sanity during difficult times.

“In addition to art, Nature has played an important role in my life. I like to garden.  I dig, I prune.  I feel the need to magnify Nature on my canvases.  Climate change and its effect on plant life has been of concern to me over the years and recurs as a theme in my work.  Construction and its irresponsible disposal of waste affects our landscape.

“My color palette for this show has soared, placing magentas and turquoises unabashedly alongside each other.  I work intuitively, always.  My paintings have complicated, dense beginnings, and like a sculptor I navigate my way through the chaos by the process of elimination.  It is intense work, finding the balance.  The work proceeds mindfully after the tumultuous beginning.”

Delna Dastur was born and raised in Bombay, India.  She came to the United States as a student, where she earned her BA from Wellesley College and her MFA from American University.  In addition to a career as a professional artist, Delna teaches a class entitled, “Exploring Abstraction” for the Smithsonian Institution and the Art League, Alexandria, VA.
