District Clay – whose motto is “Seize the Clay!” – opened in February 2015 in area of Northeast Washington DC that had no access to ceramic facilities. Since that time, our associates have produced over 7,000 pots with more than 450 children and adults taking classes at the studio. In addition, all District Clay’s clay is recycled: the studio has recycled over 12,000 lbs of clay since it opened.
The studio features state of the art equipment, including gas and electric kilns, 14 Shimpo whisper wheels, a glaze spray booth, a slab roller, a ceramic lending library, a full component of ceramic and pottery tools, a glaze tile board and a 55 inch TV for screening instructional videos. District Clay recently concluded a successful Kickstarter Campaign that raised nearly $5,000 for studio improvements.
District Clay is the only teaching studio in the area that features a program for advanced students to become resident artists with 24-hour access to the studio. District Clay also offers its students the most liberal Open Studio program of any area ceramic studio by allowing its students to sit on other classes as well as the Sunday afternoon Open Studio at no charge.
District Clay is located near Brookland at the Off the Beaten Trace Warehouse, which includes over a dozen artist and artisan studios as well as a 5,000 square foot vintage furniture showroom. District Clay occupies a 2,000 square foot studio on the second floor with window access on three of the studio’s four sides.
