Touchstone Gallery announces the upcoming juried open call exhibition “figure”. The exhibition invited artists to consider the role of the human form in contemporary art. What bodies and persons do we see, showcase, hide, define, abstract, or obscure through the expressions and interpretations of art?
Comprised of a gallery show on view at Touchstone from January 12 – February 19, 2024 and a virtual exhibition that will be available from January 12 – March 31, “figure” includes the submissions of 84 artists from 31 states and the District of Columbia. Selected artwork encompasses a wide range of media including sculpture, paintings, installation pieces, photography, social practice work, textiles, and more.
The jurors for “figure” were Lyndon Barrois Jr, artist and Assistant Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University; Lizzy Lunday, artist and NYLON’s 10 Painters to Watch; and Sheldon Scott, artist and Global Head of Purpose at Eaton Workshop. Scott states that the selected works “pull audiences beyond portraiture into a space of more complex examinations of the fullness of the human condition—related to time and space, and providing a rich discourse of what it means to both ‘be figures’ and to try to ‘figure’ an understanding of this world.”
