Four talented artists joined the gallery this year. Vu Nguyen paints passionate, modernist abstracts that refer with outraged mourning to ecological disasters in Vietnam, where he grew up. A physician and trained artist, Nguyen explores the theme further in a dream-like series of drawings, Mountainfire. Lavely Miller-Kershman dives even more directly into painful material with Bruise and other works that portray people in mental or physical anguish — injured and, we feel, capable of injuring. Teresa Jarzynski’s lovely Still Life With Flowers, with its lush color and exploration of depth, is a refreshingly innocent change of pace. And in Hester Ohbi’s From the Mountain an austere landscape seems to collapse into riotous beauty.
