Opening Reception: Saturday, April 7 from 6pm to 8pm
Katherine Blakeslee’s new show is based on nature’s growth and renewal. The interaction between nature and those who live in it goes both ways, she says, reflecting the past and present, and foreshadowing the future. This dynamic underlies her work, which can be serene or chaotic. Her recent discovery of and experimentation with alcohol ink has led her to appreciate a new and vibrant medium.
“A forgotten picture I painted as a child was saved by my father,” Blakeslee says. “Many years later when that picture was found, I was inspired to paint. A gift of watercolors from my sister gave me the way to start.”
“My love of the interactions among water, land and sky began while growing up in Maryland. The sea has been a significant part of my life since learning to swim and experiencing it as a living connection with the world. My paintings often involve water and the sometimes invisible, but always magical, line between the sky and land or sea. The translucence of watercolor makes it a wonderful medium through which to capture the mysterious ways in which light changes everything. The challenge of this medium lies in its unpredictability, the happy accident that neither artist nor paint controls.”
Self-taught as an artist, Blakeslee’s work is in private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
