The Fred Schnider Gallery of Art—which just opened in Spring 2018—recently announced its newest exhibit, A Broader Sense of Place,” Panoramic Photographs by DC photographer Sam Kittner, on display now through September 8, 2018 (Thursdays through Sundays from 2-7:00 p.m.).

In 2006, when on assignment for the Newseum in Washington, DC, Kittner became fascinated with the power of then-emerging digital photographic processes. By photographing, blending and stitching multiple exposures of a scene together, he could create an interesting passage of time and space—all portrayed within one still image. In A Broader Sense of Place, Kittner creates panoramas that dynamically portray perspective and relationships, drawing the viewer deeper into the scene at hand. Much of his photography captures dramatic photographs of DC’s most symbolic places.

“I love iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument in Washington, DC but for years I couldn’t bring myself to photograph those destinations,” says Kittner. “To capture such beloved and memorable places in a new and worthy manner was overwhelming. I had to overcome the feeling that every song was already written and every picture already taken.”

Kittner’s documentary and fine art photographic prints have been displayed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Museum of American History, The Library of Congress, and are part of numerous private collections. His works have appeared in publications throughout the world and are recognized by the leading commercial graphics trade publications, Communication Arts and Photo District News.
