Destroy the Picture Synopsis, Gallery B

Beverly Ryan has been a resident artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center since 2001 and has taught at The Art League School in Alexandria, VA, for 15 years. She has curated several shows of abstract painting, narrative painting and encaustic painting. As an artist, her artwork has been exhibited locally, regionally and internationally.

Between 1949 and 1962, numerous painters including Alberto Burri, Salvatore Scarpitta and Yves Klein produced artwork that incorporated destruction in their processes. The book Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void, written and edited by Paul Schimmel describes the exhibition of these works in Los Angeles at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 2012-2013.  In the spring of 2018, this work inspired Beverly Ryan to lead a group of her students to explore destruction and re-creation of artworks from previously unresolved paintings. The following artists will be featured in the exhibition:

  • Abol Bahadori
  • Carmencita Balagtas
