Opening: Saturday, January 27 from 7pm to 10pm
In Recluse, artist Casey Magrys explores the idea of space and boundaries. Specifically, the artist is interested in the space that develops when one is told no- when a thing, an idea, a feeling, or an image is denied. Through the process of layering, obscuring, and redacting, the viewer is invited to fixate on that space between him and the thing he is not allowed, that thing that is out of reach.
Magrys is trained as a painter, however she uses multiple media to construct and deconstruct her images. The two new bodies of work featured in this first solo exhibition at WAS gallery include a series of collages called Redactions and a video piece called Recluse. Using a process of collecting, isolating, and dislodging, Magrys cleverly creates new structures that touch on the personal and public, logical and senseless, theatrical and literal, leaving the viewer vacillating between here and there, attachment and detachment, curiosity and apathy. The viewer never arrives and that’s a pretty good place to be.
