Opening: Friday, May 6 from 7pm to 9pm
Homme Gallery is thrilled to announce Charlie Visconage’s POSITIVE FURY, the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 6 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and is on view until May 22. $10 suggested donation.
POSITIVE FURY is Charlie Visconage’s solo exploration of people’s faces in large formats. Each portrait features a heavily eye-bagged, smile-lined, neon-drenched, and pockmarked person with intense eyes and big ole teeth. The accompanying text explores the soul of the subject; their excitement, joy, misdeeds, joys, shame, secrets, and mantras that get them through the day. Psychedelic colors, a sense of fun, many thick layers of paint, and big block letters unite each piece in their aim to grab the viewer and never let go. Baltimore-based synth pop musician Shining Seconds created an original album to accompany these works which plays with the show. The album is also available on shiningseconds.bandcamp.com and streaming platforms for your listening pleasure.
Charlie Visconage (b. 1986, Baltimore, Maryland, USA) is an American self-taught artist. When other kids told him he was a “bad drawer” in school, he believed it for a long time. In 2014, a friend suggested he paint just for the hell of it, and Charlie found a new means of expression that he loved, breaking out of the false beliefs of the past. By working to capture the soul of his portrait subjects, Charlie is on a lifelong quest to better understand people by painting them. Charlie’s work seeks to capture people at their most vibrant, with portraits featuring neon-drenched features, bulging eyes, clenched teeth, and never-ending energy, with many layers of thick color.
Charlie’s work has been shown locally in the DMV area and internationally in Poland, Slovenia, Canary Islands, and Japan. Charlie’s previous major solo exhibition was 2019’s “FUNLAND” at Hole in the Sky Collective in Washington, DC. Every few years, Charlie recharges his creative energy with long-term artistic residency programs, including a recent program at Portugal’s HANGAR in March of 2022. Charlie currently lives and works in Washington, DC.
