Opening: Friday, October 28 from 7pm to 10pm

Life Around the Marble II continues the saga of showcasing the culture skateboarders have created by using the space at Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington DC. The second addition in the series, this show emphasizes the movement involved with skateboarding. Whether seen as an artform or sport, skateboarding is an expressive force utilizing the space of Freedom Plaza that normally gets overseen by the common pedestrian. With talks of it being torn down, skateboarders and artists wanted to bring awareness to how important the space is for skateboarding at Freedom Plaza throughout the past 40 years. Curated by Danny Cappello and Greg Russell Jr. Life Around the Marble II opens Friday, October 28, 2022, 7-10pm.

About the Exhibition
The Council of DC and the National Capital Planning Commission have plans of “eliminating & replacing” Freedom Plaza, a National plaza named in tribute to MLK that has served as a longtime hub for the skateboarding community. In response to the Commission’s plans to destroy this important skateboarding landmark. The art exhibition and event at Homme features photography and paintings created by skateboarders and artists. The goal of this show is to bring awareness to the displacement of the skateboarding community from this important community space. In the 1990s and early 2000s, prior to much of downtown Washington DC being gentrified, skateboarders were activating the barren Freedom Plaza and using it as a positive force for creativity, sport, and self expression, and continues to this day to be the corner stone in Washington DC skateboard culture.
