Third World Democracy is the first solo exhibition by Javaid Nayyar. It explores the immigrant experience from a Pakistani-American angle.  The works on display touch on Muslim-American identity, immigration and political events in the U.S. as well as the Muslim world. Some of the work in this exhibition addresses Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Libya as well as the immigrants from some of these Muslim nations.

Javaid Nayyar was born and raised in the melting pot of Queens in New York City, the son of Pakistani immigrants. He grew up immersed in the worlds of punk rock, hip hop, skateboarding and graffiti which surrounded him. These different subcultures as well as the cultural influence of his parents and their traditions as Muslims and Pakistanis shaped his worldview.

Javaid’s work attempts to process this kaleidoscope of both eastern/western and modern/classic influences and identity through his own filter.
