Honfleur Gallery presents never before seen mixed media works by Gustavo Díaz Sosa Friday, September 3oth at 7pm. Gustavo, a Cuban born and educated talent has in his short career, accomplished a remarkable level of achievement. Gustavo pursued his artistry through the institutions of Cuba where he felt his development to be favored and supported. In 1998, Gustavo was accepted by the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Academy of Fine Arts) “San Alejandro” in La Habana, Cuba. He became familiar with contemporary discourse on emerging art in Cuba. During this time, he was able to showcase his work at several solo exhibitions and in August of 2000 was honored with the presence of Fidel Castro at the exhibition titled “Tiempo, entre silencios pictóricos” (Time in between silent drawings). The critics and the press facilitated the public recognition that would lead his career expansion.
“The political regime in Cuba has favored me. I’ve been succeeding thanks to my studies, in addition to vocational training that in Cuba is very rich. My work was never censored, nor misunderstood. On the contrary, it has been well recognized and supported.”
Gustavo’s work is in the vein of Anselm Kiefer- both in aesthetic language and responses to a national psyche. Gustavo explains, “For many years the interpretation of faith, seeking God and man have been one of the most touched on topics in my painting, perhaps because of the influence of metaphysical thought or existentialist readings I consulted early in my career.”
Gustavo currently resides in Spain, exhibiting widely, invited as a resident artist at Arteleku in San Sebastian, and settled in the outskirts of Madrid, where he lives with his wife and works today. More recently Gustavo returned to Habana, Cuba for a solo exhibition at the Gallery, Kingdom of This World. Honfleur Gallery has been representing Gustavo since 2009.

An evening of jazz and art with two legendary jazz musicians, Freddie Redd pairs up with Butch Warren to play hard bop jazz…known for his piece “The Connection,” these two connect an era and an art form. The program is produced by DC’s own Brad Linde (saxophone) and will include: Brian Settles (tenor saxophone,) and Tony Martucci (drums.) Linde is the co-founder and co-director of the Bohemian Caverns Jazz orchestra and also leads his own 10 piece ensemble dedicated to exploring and expanding jazz styles pioneered in the 1950’s.
Born in 1939, Butch Warren began his career as a jazz bassist at the ripe age of 14. Early on, the bassist worked locally in the Washington, D.C., area, most notably with Stuff Smith. In 1958, he moved to New York to play with Kenny Dorham at the Five Spot and stayed in town throughout most of his career. During the next six years, Warren was in great demand for club work and appeared on many recordings, particularly dates for the Blue Note label led by Joe Henderson, Jackie McLean, Stanley Turrentine, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Clark, and Dorham. He was a member of Thelonious Monk’s quartet from 1963-1964 and then moved back to Washington, D.C., where he worked on a television show from 1965-1966.
Freddie Redd is most notable for his work in the film, “The Connection” where he doubles as both pianist and actor. Born in 1928, Redd has worked extensively with highly regarded musicians and recorded several albums as leader. The Connection is a 1961 feature film by the noted American experimental filmmaker Shirley Clarke which was based on the play “The Connection” by Jack Gelber which depicted the life of drug addicted jazz musicians. Antoine Sanfuentes is the Washington DC Bureau Chief for NBC news that has been documenting Butch Warren’s recent life history. His photographs chronicle Butch Warren’s come back. After four legendary years recording for blue note records in New York (1960-1964) Butch Warren spent decades off the music scene only re appearing briefly to disappear again. These photographs document his struggle as a jazz musician and an artist. Local poet Fred Joiner will also be in the line-up offering a live reading of new work specifically geared towards and for this performance.
