Opening Reception: Friday, July 7 from 7pm to 9pm
Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition of South Carolina artist: Mary Edna Fraser. All events are free to the public and white wine will be served. Mary Edna Fraser’s work is depicted from an aerial perspective, a view of the earth that is transcribed onto silk using dyes in the ancient medium of batik. The art comprises a series of narrative landscapes inspired by the terraqueous reaches of the continent, where realms of earth, sea and sky converge. Each area is carefully researched, often by hiking the terrain, exploring the waterways by boat, and painting studies on location. Geology, topography, maps, charts, and satellite images are studied to identify features of visual interest.
This thoughtful exhibition examines our place in this world and the beauty that encompasses us when we view our surroundings from another point of view. This exhibition is in partnership with the Cartography and Geographic Information Society. Free and open to the public.
The Joan Hisaoka Gallery is located at 1632 U Street NW. For more information visit www.smithcenter.org.
