Kidd has been a powerful community advocate and influencer since she co-founded the organization under the name World Arts Focus Inc. on 34th Street in Mt. Rainier, MD in 1995 at the age of 27. In 2008, she celebrated her 40th birthday with a fundraiser for the Bunker Hill location which had undergone major renovations to turn it from an abandoned direct mail facility to a performing arts center. Ten years later Kidd celebrates another milestone birthday with the HOME Improvement Campaign – seeking to maintain and improve what was started in 2008.
Planning committee members include long-time donors and supporters, local artists, business owners, and Joe’s staff members. “Brooke has done so much for this community,” one member said, “both as a resident of Mt. Rainier and the leader of Joe’s.” Joe’s is considered a second “home” to many. Another committee member, speaking at Joe’s 2018 gala told the audience, “Joe’s is my soul place. By that I mean when I come here the colors are brighter, I feel a sense of harmony and ease. When I walk in here I feel like home.” She added, laughing, that Joe’s was a place where “you can use all your crayons in your crayon box! You’ll experience a unique feeling of belonging and be recharged, energized, and empowered.” Friends of Brooke and Joe’s are encouraged to share their video or written testimonialto be used in a compilation video that will debut the night of the event.
The event will be a uniquely Joe’s experience – with the theme “outlandish” to reflect Kidd’s own attitude and joie de vivre as Joe’s executive director. Guests can expect to be wowed from the moment they enter the building with stunning decorations, interactive experiences, and a delicious community vibe.
In December 2016 post the November election, Kidd spoke to a small group of donors at a reception where her words gave many hope: “When we engage in the creative process as a group, something special happens to address the bits of society that other structures can’t. It’s the creative community that has the real juice to foster what we want in a just society. I’m determined that we keep spreading this model of Joe’s.”
All are invited to come out and celebrate Kidd, a truly unique visionary arts leader.
Joe’s is located at 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mt. Rainier, MD 20712.
