Joe’s presents What’s Going On, an evening-length work features Modern, Jazz and West African dance to the music of Marvin Gaye, premiering in Prince George’s County, MD November 2ndat 8 pm. What’s Going On seeks to provoke thoughtfulness and spark conversations to ignite change in each community it touches. The performance takes place Joe’s Movement Emporium at 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mt. Rainier, MD 20712 and is appropriate for all ages. Tickets start at $34 though student, senior and children rates are available. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.joesmovement.org.

Vincent E. Thomas looks through the lens of Marvin Gaye’s transcendent music and finds a reflection of the world today. Taking inspiration from 1971’s inimitable What’s Going On, Marvin Gaye’s insights into life, love and social justice are given fresh perspectives with new choreography by Vincent E. Thomas, Ralph Glenmore and Sylvia Soumah. Songs include Heard it Through the Grapevine, Let’s Get It On, Mona Lisa, Inner City Blues, Got to Give It Up and many more classic hits. What’s Going On takes a fresh look at Marvin Gaye’s music, provoking thoughtfulness and sparking conversations to ignite change in each community it touches.

What’s Going On is managed by Growth & Change LLC, with Artistic Direction by Vincent  E. Thomas and choreography by Vincent as well as Sylvia Soumah and Ralph Glenmore. What’s Going On is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by Dance Place in partnership with The CenterStage at the Reston Community Center and NPN. ABOUT VINCENT E. THOMAS
Vincent E. Thomas (Artistic Director) is a dancer, choreographer and teacher. His choreographic work has been presented nationally and internationally. He is Artistic Director of VTDance and Professor of Dance at Towson University. Ralph Glenmore (Choreographer) is a former principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. His illustrious Broadway career includes A Chorus Line, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ and Bubblin’ Brown Sugar. Sylvia Soumah (Choreographer) is Founder/Artistic Director of Coyaba Dance Theater, performing traditional and contemporary West African dance and music.

Established in 1995, Joe’s Movement Emporium is a cultural arts hub that acts as a catalyst for creativity and economic opportunity. Based in Mount Rainier, Maryland in the Prince George’s Gateway Arts District, Joe’s serves more than 70,000 visitors annually. Joe’s has five arts-based youth programs that bridge the creative divide between under-resourced families and those with means. Through programs and productions in education, performing arts, and work readiness, Joe’s integrates progressive education, creativity, and youth development.
