LaPop is excited to present States of Being Live, a performance of life-sized, life drawings made on-site at LaPop over the course of three days (March 21 – March 23, 2019) by artist Claire Brandt. States of Being Live is a collaborative, community work that will be made with volunteer models—both spontaneous visitors to the gallery and people scheduled in advance. Each person will pose for about 20 minutes while Brandt makes a whole body portrait. The portraits will layer on top of each other, creating an accumulation of figures and a whole, abstract drawing of the community in which individuals are visible. On Sunday, March 24, in the afternoon Brandt will hold a workshop for people interested in making their own life-size, life drawings. The resultant works will comprise the exhibition running through April 28, 2019.
Brandt’s work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco, and most recently at Washington State University in Pullman. Brandt has been awarded residencies, including at the Horse and Art Research Program in Hungary and the Jentel Foundation in Wyoming. She received her A.B. in English and American Literature from Harvard and an MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.
LaPop is a cultural salon in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington DC.
