The Montgomery College Visual and Performing Arts Department of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus presents a virtual artist talk with the Spring Semester 2024 artist in residence Lauren Emeritz. Emeritz is a graphic artist, letterpress artist and book artist.

The Open Gallery will be hosting an Exhibition titled “Building an Art Practice: Prints & Artist Books by Lauren Emeritz.” The exhibition will run through April 19th, 2024. A reception will be held March 21st from 11:00am -1:00pm in the Open Gallery. These events are free and open to the public.

About the Artist
Lauren is a letterpress printer and book artist. Her work combines traditional hand carving and letterpress printing with modern techniques. She creates prints and books by hand using a Vandercook press and wood type, including type she designs and carves herself. She publishes her artist books under the name Abstract Orange. In 2016, the library of Congress’ Rare Books and Special Collections Division acquired her book, “Hand Carved Alphabet.” In 2017, Lauren completed an internship in letterpress design at Hatch Show Print in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1879. Lauren holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Delaware. She creates art & design in Washington DC, and teaches printing at Pyramid Atlantic in Hyattsville, MD. See her work online at

About the AIR Program
Visit Artist in Residency Program ( ) for more information. The Artist in Residence (AIR) program provides artists with studio space for up to one semester in duration. Studios provided are highly visible and placed in an interactive academic setting. To maximize interaction with academic programs, residency dates will align with the academic calendar. The current Artist in Residence will interact with students both in person and online via departmental social media pages, @930KingStreet on Instagram.
