Opening Reception : Friday June 10 from 6:30-8pm
Matt Neuman, New York based independent artist, will launch his solo exhibition, “Pattern Recognition,” in Washington DC’s Long View Gallery. The exhibition, Neuman’s second solo at Long View, will display over 30 newly crafted paintings and prints that deliver bold color and energetic line work where pattern and repetition challenge viewers to contend with their own scale on a cosmic level. “Pattern Recognition” is a continuation of Neuman’s decade-long dive into geometry as a visual channel to represent the lived experience and will be on display from June 10th to August 7th.
Neuman seamlessly integrates his interest in geometric design with his many fascinations in the physical world. Through complex and technical processes, he crafts printing blocks by carving wooden surfaces and transferring inks in rich, thick layers which are perfectly aligned and deeply satisfying. Many of the show’s major works take us beyond our expectations of the “artists’ print.” Neuman generates printed parts that act as building blocks whereby the process of play and discovery take over as he exploits geometric patterning that informs the shape of the artworks themselves. His acrylic paintings on panel serve up atmospheric blends of gradient color, overlaid with hard-edged line work, again, where internal geometry dictates unexpected non-square shapes met by finely crafted custom frames. The artist emphasizes scale and repetition to create sensory impressions that illicit a visceral experience born from his instinctual tendency to organize visual information.
“I’m thrilled to bring these artworks to D.C. My last show with Long View was so well received and I look forward to building on that excitement and hopefully deliver something challenging and inspiring to those that attend,” says Neuman. “I want viewers to feel the artworks’ energy wash over them. I want them to stay intensely present with the artwork but at the same time be looking back at themselves from light years away.” The shows’ title ‘Pattern Recognition’, not only makes reference to Neuman’s compositional motifs, but serves as a broader, more overarching, metaphor where the recognition of pattern is a gateway to learning, understanding, and personal growth.
