Reception: Saturday, February 16 from 5pm to 7pm
Talk: Sunday, February 17 from 1pm to 2pm
Martha Spak Gallery at the Wharf is pleased to present an exhibition featuring artist and art educator Nina Mickelsen. The Beauty of Imperfection show will run from January 30-February 28, 2019 with a reception Saturday, February 16 from 5-7 pm and gallery talk February 17 1-2pm. The exhibition will focus on epoxy resin paintings with strong graphic design elements.
As a native of Finland, Nina Mickelsen’s work is influenced by Nordic design: bright colors, bold shapes, crisp, strong lines. She creates vibrant large-scale paintings with precision and complexity. Mickelsen says, “Somewhat unexpectedly, art led me on a journey of self-discovery”. She studied graphic design, painting and printmaking at the Corcoran School of Art and Design and George Washington University.
The use of color is important and energizing. For this show, the walls will be layered with screen-printed art on canvas, linen and wood board. The artist is able to create art with multiple transparent layers, adding shadows and impactful depth. Her work is uniquely her own. She says, “I tend to explore the juxtaposition of controlled shapes and natural free strokes. For me it is the eternal dialogue between discipline and abandon or the breaking of perfection.”
This exhibition will also include Finnish sculptor, Marja Ponnka Carpenter, who creates 3-dimensional spike sculptures made of hand-filled fabric cones on wood. These colorful spikes appear like creatures.
Each monthly exhibition has a theme that exemplifies the featured artists’ style. Beauty of Imperfections runs through February 28, 2019.
