Nepenthe Gallery is pleased to present a BEACH exhibit featuring both beach and summer-themed works of art.  The grand opening for Nepenthe’s special exhibit will be held on Thursday, May 26th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the gallery in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria. “We are excited to celebrate the summer season and capture the beauty, joy and relaxation of a seaside and summer vacation through this specially curated selection of beach-themed artwork,” said gallery owner Carrie Garland.

The exhibit will be open for two weeks and highlights include:

  • Frank Surf Board, a collaboration with Gary Linden, renowned surfboard “engineer”
  • Several new ocean-inspired encaustic paintings by San Diego artist Shima Shanti
  • Beach watercolor by Maine artist Evelyn Dunphy
  • Brightly colored works using resin on wood blocks by Abbey Matthews, a Florida artist
  • Beautifully framed wave photograph triptych from Australia
  • Beach-themed works by currently represented artists including Judy Heiser, Ann Sklar, Susie Webster, Susanne Fyffe, Flying Edna, Leslie Hatton, and Florida artist Alma Ramirez
  • “Sea Stories” by Renee C. Gage Photography – a monumental and dramatic black and white photograph on canvas, framed
  • New Slim Aarons print in a chrome frame
  • 20-30 artfully decorated painted oyster shells
  • Nepenthe logo beach balls and plastic pails for attendees to take home to add to the playful theme of the evening.

Named after the Greek term for “a place of no sorrow,” Nepenthe Gallery is the first of its kind in Alexandria – a vibrant artistic oasis that gallery owners and Alexandria natives Jim and Carrie Garland have created to serve as a community gathering spot. A retreat, a respite…a place of no sorrow. With their gallery, the Garlands hope to bring that sense of escape and joy to their beloved Mount Vernon community.

The art at Nepenthe is as dynamic and diverse as the local and regional community. “Our art gallery features work from a wide range of artisans,” Garland shared. “Local artists we know and love as well as artists from other parts of the country and around the world.”  The gallery features a selection of oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, photographs, glass art and sculpture, as well as a fun mix of iconic prints and neon images. An added bonus is the on-site custom frame shop offering a vast variety of custom frames and mirrors.

The gallery is located at 7918 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA 22308. Contact the gallery at 703-314-5399 or |
