The Willow Street Gallery in Takoma, DC is pleased to announce its second solo exhibition of 2023 featuring works by Mei Mei Chang.
NOISESCAPE II is a reactionary piece to the stressors of everyday life noise pollution on our mental and physical beings. In NOISESCAPE II, Mei Mei asks us to take responsibility for the sounds we make in relationship with others, and to be aware of our systems of entitlement that privilege some noise above the peace of others. At this exhibit, you will traverse through the visual and sonic representation of an individual’s conflict with noise.
NOISESCAPE II will run from May 19 to June 18, 2023. An opening reception and unspoken dialogue occurrence will take place on May 26, 2023 from 7-9 pm. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the workshop on June 3rd from 1- 3 pm.
There is an artist talk scheduled for Friday, May 26 from 7-9 pm. The Gallery will be open on Friday from 7-9 pm during the exhibition.
There will also be an opportunity to sign up for a 2-hr workshop with Mei Mei Chang on Saturday, June 3rd from 1-3 pm. In this workshop, participants will create their own Noise Pattern Project from deconstructed music boxes, fabric, and other materials. Enrollment is limited to 10 people. Artist’s Statement and Bio: Mixed media and installation artist Mei Mei Chang received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Ohio University in 2002. Mei Mei explores various media to bridge her internal and external worlds. Mei Mei Chang draws from the deep and mysterious sides of the psyche. This is the source of her art and it can only be expressed in a language that transcends words. Mei Mei believes that the sounds in our environment intrude our consciousness and occupy space, rent-free. Mei Mei wields her art as an activist tool, hoping to spread a revival of respect. She hopes NOISESCAPE II will bring a heightened awareness in the battle for inner quietude.
NOISESCAPE II will run through June 18, 2023. The artist will be present for the opening reception on Friday, May 19 from 7-9 pm.
