Open Studios: Saturday, November 16 from 12pm to 6pm
.
STABLE and 52 O Street Studios are pleased to announce that the artists at both locations will open their studios to the public on Saturday November 16th from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public.
This is anticipated to be the first of many collaborative opportunities to invite the DC community at-large to engage with talented local contemporary visual artists. There are 32 artists working at STABLE, including emerging, mid-career, and established visual artists. Visitors are invited to step inside individual studios for a special opportunity to learn more about each artists’ work and process. Many artists will have work available for purchase at varying price points.
STABLE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen Washington, DC’s contemporary visual arts community by providing affordable and sustainable studio space, and collaborating with local, national, and international partners to provide programming and exhibition opportunities, fostering an engaged, diverse community in Washington, DC. STABLE works to create opportunities and share resources with artists, strengthening the artistic community and facilitating the expansion of networks.
STABLE was founded by three professional artists: Caitlin Teal Price, Tim Doud and linn meyers. After living and working in NYC, the three co-founders have chosen to make Washington, DC their home. In the fall of 2018, 32 artists were selected from 150 applicants by a panel of arts professionals, and in June 2019 this first cohort of artists moved into the studios at STABLE.
The building at 52 O Street NW in Washington, DC was built in 1914. At that time, the neighborhood was a remote, industrial part of town. 52 O Street was converted into artist studios in 1978 by Eric Rudd. Rudd felt there was a shortage of affordable space for Washington-based artists. It was, apparently, simple to convert the warehouse into art studios, because of its open, flexible spaces and high ceilings. Marty Youmans purchased the building in 2003 and continues to maintain it as a community for DC’s working artists.
STABLE will kick off the event at 12:00 PM with brief remarks in their exhibition space by Dr. Jordan Amirkhani, who curated STABLE’s inaugural exhibition Dialogues, on view through March 8th, 2020.
STABLE is located at 336 Randolph Place NE.
52 O St. Studios are located at 52 O Street NW.
Studios will be open from 12 PM to 6 PM on November 16th.
