Opening Reception: Saturday, September 15 from 7pm to 10pm
From Elizabeth Piper Board:
This body of work sets out to unite my visual contemplations on femininity, power and sexuality. In a way, it is somatic therapy – reuniting the body I have been at war with my whole life with my fluctuating sense of self. Taking back my ‘self’ from my dissociative states and claiming my sexuality as empowerment rather than using it as a form of self-harm. I cast off my need to be masculine in order to feel safe and wholeheartedly embrace my womanhood with strength and poise. Balancing control and release within self-portraiture.
Elizabeth Piper Board is a visual and verbal artist living and working in the Washington DC area. Her visual practice spans a wide variety of mediums – never wanting to be stuck in one form of expression. Personal narrative is common in her work and she uses art to examine her own patterns of thinking, release anxiety and cope with discomfort. While photographic methods are common in her work and she studies photography, she regularly uses painting, collage, embroidery and video to express herself visually. Her work has been shown at The Watergate Gallery, Neon Cat at The Lemon Collective, Olly Olly and the Arts Walk at Monroe Street Market as part of FotoWeekDC.
Olly Olly wants to nourish the body and the community as well. We will be collecting healthy non-perishable food items for the Food Bridge Program at Britepaths, which provides short-term emergency food assistance to Fairfax County area residents who are in crisis. We encourage you to bring a healthy non-perishable food item to donate. The Food Bridge Program is most in need of cooking oil, brown rice, dried beans, canned fruit in its own juices, canned tomato products and pasta sauce.
