Opening Reception: Saturday, April 27 from 5pm to 7pm
Photoworks presents Human Landscapes featuring work by Alan Awakim, Hannah Fox, and David Pellegrini on view from April 19 to May 26, 2019 at Photoworks in Glen Echo Park. There will be an opening reception and gallery talk on Saturday, April 27 from 5pm to 7pm.
Curated by Fabian Concalves Borrega, Human Landscapes is the conjunction of three photographic series that propose a dialogue between the subject and the objects with which they are surrounded. In their joint work, Interior Landscapes, Alan Awakim and Hannah Fox bring us an intimate, narrative series that shows the loneliness of old age. Their individual styles work together to visually and thematically complement each other. David Pellegrini’s series, Camagüey: Memory & Meaning, features photographs from a city in the center of the island of Cuba where residents of the community pose with precious objects that evoke belief and past experiences.
Each series highlights the photographers’ genuine interest in exploring the lives of people outside of their families and local communities. Using photography as a bridge in communication between cultures, the artists have featured scenes that speak to individual human experiences. All of these works are about connecting to a life outside oneself, whether it be the distinctly different life that old age offers or the often obfuscated life of the Cuban people. Viewing these photos and imagining the subjects’ life stories through portraits and treasured possessions is a legacy for the subject and a gift from the artist.
