RELIEF curated by John Paradiso.
Please join Portico for an artist reception on Nov 16 from 6-8PM for their new exhibition RELIEF with Patrick M. Craig. It is also their one-year anniversary and they are thrilled to have had such a wonderful year, please stop by and help them celebrate.
Patrick M. Craig is a professor of painting and drawing at the University of Maryland. For the last ten years, his studio effort has included the exploration and research of repurposed plastic as a viable artistic medium. While he continues to make paintings, the pursuit of wall, pedestal, and floor sculptures has been a competing interest. The artworks in this exhibition are recent reliefs composed from a variety of plastic sources. They include pushpins, cutlery, hubcaps, toys, compact disks, prescription bottles, eyeglasses, and a variety of other plastics. Within the aggregate, these pieces embrace elements of humor, tragedy, and social commentary along with material fascination. The reliefs are small in scale, designed specifically for a space such as the Portico Gallery. They are provocative, intimate, unique objects that encourage broad interpretation.
Craig has been featured in exhibitions at galleries, museums, and art centers throughout the U.S., including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Chrysler Museum, St. Lawrence University, Marin MOCA and many others. He additionally exhibited internationally in Poland, Brussels, West Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Japan, Spain, The Soviet Union, and the United Arab Emirates.
