Opening Reception: Sunday, October 6 from 2pm to 4pm
Printmakers Inc is proud to present Avis Fleming’s solo exhibition titled “Notes from the Animal Kingdom“. Avis gesturally captures animal subjects in a variety of art form mediums: prints, ceramics, drawing and watercolor painting. Avis draws from her personal experience and observation of fauna from living in the Louisiana bayous, the islands of Maine and South Carolina, the horse and cattle farms of rural Loudoun County, and leading Art League School trips to western Ireland. She has been a member of Printmakers Inc for almost a decade and showcases several printmaking techniques in this show including: lithographs, monotypes, etchings, and Chine Colle`. Once the print is created, she often cuts out the animal subjects and then collages them onto another print using a mechanical press, a technique called “Chine Colle`” – as highlighted in her artwork titled “Black Pianos at Ballenger Barn“. Her style is both gestural and painterly. Animal subjects depicted in her “Ballenger Barn” and “Zoo” series on exhibit include elephants, horses, cows, sheep, seals, owls, and pelicans. Avis has and continues to teach at the Art League School since 1985. The artwork will be on exhibit from 2 Oct 2019 to 2 Dec 2019.
Printmakers Inc is located at Torpedo Factory Art Center/Studio 325, 105 North Union Street, Alexandria, VA.
