Opening Reception: Friday, June 21 from 6:30pm to 9pm
With dreams of being an artist tempered by his father’s advice for practicality, Akman didn’t seriously make art until his retirement. Ten years ago he came to Pyramid Atlantic to explore the possibilities of screenprinting. The results are exhibited in this solo show of prints he created between 2009 and 2019. Akman’s meticulous nature is evident in these rich and carefully layered works that represent a decade of art-making.
Specializing in hand-pulled screenprinting, Akman is mostly self-taught. While precision is a goal, he has realized that each layer of printing poses risks and challenges that lead him to a different outcome than first imagined. Akman wryly admits that screenprinting has taught him to “adjust my dreams to the reality of the squeegee.”
Akman spent his “working” years making a “living” as a consultant to the federal government where he developed policies and procedures to assess the impact of new equipment on soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Throughout his career, there was always an art project somewhere in the background – painting, graphics, paper cutting, among others. “I have been an artist most of my life, simply not a professional artist.”
This exhibition is made possible in part through funding from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County.
