Opening Reception: Friday, June 23 from 6pm to 9pm

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (PAAC) will celebrate the first year in its new Hyattsville home with an exhibit: One Year Later. Curator Molly Ruppert has assembled a group show of 52 artists to mark 52 weeks of occupancy with work priced at $365 or less to mark the days of the year.

The artist roster is a mix of those long associated with the 36-year old arts organization and those who will be showing at PAAC for the first time. The exhibition is mostly comprised of works on paper or those that involve printing as they closely align with PAAC’s core areas of expertise: printmaking, papermaking, and bookmaking. Artists include Bill Dunlap, Ellen Hill, Helen Frederick, Margaret Boozer, Maggie Michael, Ellen Goodman, John Paradiso, and 45 more.

In the summer of 2016, PAAC moved from its former location in Silver Spring to a new home in the burgeoning arts district of Hyattsville. Its new 13,000 square foot facility is an artistic hub featuring workshops; maker spaces in printing, bookmaking, and papermaking; an art gallery; and 18 private artist studios. Prior to PAAC’s tenancy, the building was vacant for nearly 40 years. Its checkered past includes operating as a church, jail, silent movie theater, and a duckpin bowling alley.

“This exhibition is part birthday party, part housewarming event for us” remarks Executive Director Kate Taylor Davis who joined the PAAC team in January of 2017. “It takes a while to settle in after a move, and we found that some of the plans worked perfectly and some needed tweaking.” One of the tweaks was expanding the modest gallery space. The new gallery is double its original size and opens the upper level so that visitors can enjoy not only the exhibitions, but also the architecture. “The fresh gallery walls are a striking juxtaposition to the remnants of plaster, original brickwork, and corinthian columns of this historied and wacky space we have been so lucky to land.”

One Year Later opens June 23rd with a reception from 6-9 pm.  The exhibition runs through August 5th with
