The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus will welcome the art exhibition Quieting Change, Stilling Motion by Regina Miele to its Forum Gallery from September 22 to November 5. An artist’s reception is scheduled for 2pm to 4pm Saturday, September 23.
Miele’s exhibition highlights her interest in observation and capturing the invisible in her paintings. Quoting Oscar Wilde, “The mystery of life is the visible, not the invisible,” Miele said “The ‘not observed,’ when rendered in art, reforms and elevates the object or scene into something of worth” – a scenario in which she finds a great deal of irony and humor.
“Observation often leads to capturing the invisible, the tensions between people, the subtle changes in light from one part of a city to another. It is these moments that I am attracted to as a painter,” Miele said. “Row houses and the factories with adornments of Gothic architecture, grid iron windows with tiny squares of broken glass and the spans across the Susquehanna River as seen from the train, are an endless source of subject matter. The New Jersey Turnpike dotted with the sculpture of industry in Modernist geometry, flames and clouds rising from smoke stacks surrounded by reflective tanks are another. I paint and draw these moments because they are parts of my life.”
Miele was born in New York City and now resides in Washington, DC The artist emphasized that she values her rigorous classical education and academic training at Il Scuolo Lorenzo Di Medici in Florence, Italy, as it has given her an abundantly full tool box that allows seamless movement between mediums and subject matters. In 1991, Miele graduated with honors from Catholic University with a bachelor’s degree in studio art and a concentration in painting.
Previously, Miele has shown her work in solo exhibitions in galleries all over the world including in the Washington, D.C. area, New York City, Chicago, Kona, Hawaii, Miami, Florida, and Florence, Italy. Miele has received a number of honors and awards including being selected to be a part of the annual book publication of Studio Visit Magazine in 2014. Miele is represented by R. Miele Fine Arts and Gallery Plan B in Washington, D.C., and by Wright Gallery in Hawaii.
