The Forum Gallery at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus is pleased to present The Secret Garden: Paintings by Matthew Pinney The exhibition will run from November 10, 2018 through January 7th, 2019 with a public opening reception on Saturday afternoon, November 17, 2-4PM.

The Forum Gallery on the first level of the Schlesinger Arts Center is pleased to exhibit five large format paintings by Matthew Pinney. Matt Pinney is a multi-media artist living and working in Washington D.C. and an Assistant Professor at Northern Virginia Community College’s Manassas campus where he teaches studio art.

Matthew’s paintings employ personal myths, reinterpretations of history, and investigation of cultural assigned roles to create narratives that are unbound by time. Flattening linear time into an ever present now on canvas, he recognizes the interrelated nature of our society. We travel huge distances, access vast amounts of information, and form relationships through a checklist of culturally assigned concepts of value.

I create narratives that employ historical or mythological figures in timeless settings that serve as symbolic representations to be subverted or reinterpreted in the context of my own experience.

Pinney has been awarded the DC Commission of the Arts and Humanities Fellowship and the purchase award from DCCAH’s Washington Collection in 2016 and 2017. Pinney received his Masters of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and his Bachelors of Fine Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Forum Gallery is located on the second level of the Schlesinger Center. The artists’ reception is free and open to the public. The galleries at the Schlesinger Center are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and during concert hall performances and public events.
