The Passage Gallery at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus is please to announce the solo exhibition, “Coming to Light, Encaustics by Angela White ”. The exhibition runs from March 9th, 2019 – April 21st, 2019 with a public exhibition reception Saturday, March 16th, 2019 2-4PM.

Angela White is a fine artist inspired by physical, spiritual and emotional memories that create the visual depth and density of her work.  Natural and sensual materials such as oils and encaustic paint allow the blending of edges to create visual depth. By superimposing layers of media, the varied themes and processes of her work are exposed.

“The versatility of encaustic paintings from the day of the Fayum portraits to contemporary uses of encaustic painting astonishes me and drew me to the medium. I had reached a point where I wanted to add density, layers and embedded objects to my work and this is the perfect medium. Encaustic is a sensuous medium made up of purified beeswax, pigment and damar resin.  I love the warmth and scent of the melted beeswax when I’m working. It reminds me of flesh, especially when I use it with paper or as a 3D medium. This particular series of my paintings, is focused on using vintage Indonesian Tjaps to create repeated patterns, shapes and has given me an opportunity to share my love of nature.”

The Passage Gallery is located on the second level of the Schlesinger Center. The artists’ reception is free and open to the public. The galleries at the Schlesinger Center are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and during concert hall performances and public events. The Schlesinger Center is located at 4915 East Campus Drive, Alexandria, VA.
