The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus welcomes regional artist Lina Alattar who will display her show At the Seams in the second-level Passage Gallery from March 17 through April 30 with an artist’s reception from 2pm to 4pm Saturday, March 25.

Alattar works predominantly with ink and acrylic paint to explore the value of chance and impermanence in the creative process. For At the Seams, Alattar used the thickness of acrylics along with fluidity of the ink to create “another visual paradox played out in these color fields, as marks obscure the traces of layers that are revealed through the surface.”

“The search for balance is fundamental in my work. Each piece starts with the notions of risk juxtaposed with calculated marks,” Alattar said. “Broad, spontaneous color fields are confronted with deliberate and intricate markings. A visual order is constantly shifting, as I invite in the arbitrary yet stay conscious of its counterpart.”

Alattar received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Middle Tennessee State University where she studied painting and graphic design. She continued her education in Gubio, Italy, through an Art Study Program where she trained with painters who encouraged an experimental and process-based approach to painting. Alattar is the recipient of the 2016 Art Bank Grant from the DC commission on the Arts and Humanities. She has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in the D.C. metro area, New York City and London.
